MADRID — Two Muslims who beat up a Spanish shop owner during a scuffle outside a madrid shop have been convicted of attempted murder.
Police say Ahmad Mateen, 19, attacked shopkeeper Omar Simeone in the early morning hours of Sept. 11.
He beat up Simeon, 44, while shouting “go back to your country” at him.
Simeone was hospitalized for five days in a coma.
He died two weeks later.
The shop owner was in a serious condition.
The case sparked outrage across Spain, with Muslims across the country rallying against what they say is an attack on their religion.
“The crime against Omar Simesone was a hate crime against Islam,” a statement on the group Islamic Defenders Front said.
“It is an affront to our religion, our religion has always been the only homeland of our people.”
